On this day in 1974 the Garland Landmark Museum was dedicated. The museum's original location was behind City Hall at Museum Plaza. Currently, it is at Walnut and Sixth Streets in Heritage Crossing.

The Community Multicultural Commission will co-host the free Literacy for Life event from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21.
The event at the Curtis Culwell Center, 4999 Naaman Forest Blvd., will feature free food, prizes and giveaways for all ages. Features include a Book Walk, a make-and-take craft event, a book character parade, a poetry café, writing challenges and reader awards.
The Garland Independent School District’s myON Reader program will also be featured. The program is unique to North Texas in that community members as well as students who visit any of the City’s four libraries have access to a personalized digital library of more than 6,000 books.
Literacy for Life is a partnership between the Community Multicultural Commission, the Garland ISD and the cities of Rowlett and Sachse to promote literacy skills for all. For more information, email CMC@GarlandTX.gov.
