Garland’s Central Library will undergo renovations beginning April 16. The renovations will incorporate life and safety upgrades to the building, as well as changes to make the library more attractive and functional for the community. Expected changes include additional study and meeting spaces, a revamped community room, and a redesigned children’s area.
The renovations will likely take 12 to 14 months to complete. In the interim, the Central Library will serve the community from a temporary location at the former Garland Women’s Activities Building, 713 Austin St., just down the street from the current library site.
What hours will the temporary Central Library be open?
Central Library Express – will retain the same hours of operation:
Sunday: 2 to 6 p.m.
Monday through Thursday: 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Friday and Saturday: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
What services will be available at the temporary location?
During the renovation, library staff will provide service to the downtown area from both Central Library Express in the former Women's Activities Building (Central Library Express) and the library kiosk planned for installation near the Downtown Square.
Central Library Express will offer:
Wireless Internet access, public computers, and other technology
Reference services
Indoor and outdoor programming for all ages with limited seating
New and in-demand materials collections
Holds pickup area
Browsing collection (kiosk on the Square)
Will service at Garland’s branch libraries be affected?
There are no planned disruptions because of the Central Library renovation, but your branch may be busier than it has been in the past. We are planning for this and will do our best to make this a positive experience for everyone.
Branch Hours:
Tuesday and Thursday: 12 to 8 p.m.

Garland Libraries Go Fine-Free
The library will no longer charge late fees on materials returned after their due dates. Library staff do ask that users be considerate of other patrons and return or renew borrowed items at their earliest convenience. Items that are not returned or renewed will be considered lost and the library will still charge for lost or damaged items. The charge for a lost item is the replacement cost, plus a five-dollar processing fee and you will not be able to use your library card until the item is returned or paid for and cleared from your account. Our goal is to give more people access to the library, so please return your items.
